Guide to Nongovernmental Organizations for the Military (NGO Handbook)

CDHAM published a chapter on “Post-Conflict Reconstruction in the Health Sector: Host Nation Perspective” as part of a wider publication for the Peacekeeping and Stability Operations Institute, entitled: Transitions, Issues, Challenges and Solutions in International Assistance. The Chapter tackled civil-military coordination, the cultural sensitivities to take into account, the missing role of multilateral institutions and the importance of a host country’s commitment to improving its own health sector.

Field training exercises integrate cross-cultural education

CDHAM created a pilot program to expose USU students to a stability operations scenario as part of a larger program, the Defense Medical Language Initiative (DMLI), to develop language and culture training for Department of Defense health personnel.

CDHAM Senior Scientist, Dr. Zygmunt Dembek, published two articles in the past month in two different journals. The articles tackled foodborne bioterrorism and the application of botulinum toxin to wound healing. The articles were published in Chemical and Biological Warfare (UK) and the Journal of Toxicology, respectively.

The aforementioned publications can be found online under the Chemical and Biological Warfare journal and Journal of Toxicology.

RESOURCES

The Sphere Project

Launched in 1997 by a group of humanitarian NGOs and the Red Cross and Red Crescent movement, The Sphere Project is an initiative to define and uphold the standards by which the global community responds to the plight of people affected by disasters, principally through a set of guidelines that are set out in the Humanitarian Charter and Minimum Standards in Disaster Response (commonly referred to as the Sphere Handbook). Sphere is based on two core beliefs: first, that those affected by disaster or conflict have a right to life with dignity and therefore a right to protection and assistance, and second, that all possible steps should be taken to alleviate human suffering arising out of disaster and conflict. Sphere is three things; a handbook, a broad process of collaboration, and an expression of commitment to quality and accountability.

Beyond Pandemics: A Whole-Society Approach to Disaster Preparedness

http://www.towardsasaferworld.org/sites/default/files/tasw_book_web_9.23.pdf

The TASW initiative is pleased to announce the release of its book, “Beyond Pandemics: A Whole-of-Society Approach to Disaster Preparedness”, which was distributed at the Towards a Safer World (TASW) conference in Rome, Italy on September 15-16, 2011.

“Beyond Pandemics” outlines the human, economic and societal benefit of increasing collaboration, planning and dialogue across the entire societal architecture. Forming partnerships with non-traditional partners in public health issues it includes travel, animal health, private business, global health and civil-military response teams.

A collaborative effort by many agencies and technical leaders challenges the leaders from the whole-of-society to help unify experiences and resources to successfully manage and mitigate the impact of future pandemics and other global disasters.
